6 Things To Do In Prague

Looking for the most beautiful, fun, affordable, and all around amazing location to check out this year? Well my friend, I personally would highly recommend Prague in the scenic Czech Republic. It truly is an amazing city. It captured my attention enough to want to go there for a month to get TEFL certified but was so amazing that I ended up staying for almost a year. I’ve never enjoyed living anywhere else as much as I did living there. So what makes it so great?

Well the old town in the city center has been extremely well maintained and is beyond gorgeous. It feels like you’re walking around in a disney fairy tale everywhere you go. Then they have some amazing food! Seriously, I’ve developed a deep obsession with Czech gulas. The beer is cheap and always flowing, the slivovice is cold, and the people are friendly. It’s a great place to party or just chill out and enjoy the sights. It really is perfect for everyone. But while I was living there, there were a few places that became favorites of mine. I picked these places because they’re great places to explore the city where just as many locals go as do tourists. So here’s my list of 6 must do’s in Prague, CZ.

David Cerny

David Cerny is a strange dude in the Czech Republic. He’s been known to make loud political statements in obscure/strange ways. For example, floating a 10 meter tall middle finger down the river in front of the Prague Castle by Charles Bridge or making a double decker bus do pushups. You’ll see his artwork all over the city. I think if you go to Prague and you have enough time, you should go hunting throughout the city for some of his more obscure artwork. His bronze babies, his Meet Factory, and his 2 ft tall ass with a video in it. I’m not gonna tell you all his stuff or where to find it but I think if you’re going to Prague you should know about him and know some of his work. He’s done some really amazing work and he’s a great example of the general Czech mentality.

Cross Club

You’ll probably find this on other “To Do” lists of Prague and for good reason. I don’t like allot of touristy places and I don’t normally like clubs but this place is totally worth a visit. It’s one of the coolest bars/clubs that I’ve ever been to just because it’s such a weird place. They’ve put a whole lot of work into this place! I mean, there’s all kinds of weird things welded together and moving all over the place. It’s like Willy Wonka land for a drunk mechanic at a junkyard with a welder. You can’t put this place into words, it just has to be seen to be believed. Go on the weekend and plan on getting drunk and having a great time. It’s not too far away from the city center and it’s about a block away from the metro stop — Nádraží Holešovice. So it’s very easily accessible and it’s totally worth making it out there.

Naplavka

Great example of where tourists and locals both love to go. In the summer you can’t beat weekend trips down to the river bank. They’ve got all kinds of festivals and special events that they do down there that’s always worth a visit. But usually it’s just a really cool and chill vibe with people just sitting outside enjoying the day. The farmers market on the weekends is a great place to enjoy some traditional wares from farmers outside of Prague that come in to peddle their produce and food stuffs. Seriously just go down there without any plans and just hangout for half the day. Drink some beer and look out over the Vltava River to Old Town and the Prague Castle. It’s a beautiful view, great people, chill vibe, good food, and of course Pilsner Urquel.

Riegrovy Sady

Ok this is mostly a locals or expats spot and I didn’t notice a whole lot of tourists there usually. So, although I haven’t read a whole lot of travel advice for Prague, I hope this is somewhat of a “locals hangout” spot. So maybe I’m giving some cool hidden gem advice here? Anyway, the best times to go are for soccer (futball for you non-Americans) games and for sunsets. The outdoor beer garden is a great place to enjoy a good international soccer game on the outdoor projector. Then towards the end of the day the hill facing Old Town becomes crowded with kids hanging out, smoking, and drinking all while watching the sunset over the town. It’s the best view in town and it’s a great atmosphere. Everyone should take time out of their busy days to just chill out on a hill and watch the sunset.

Klášterní Pivovar Strahov

Ok, so I’ve never eaten here so I don’t have a great in depth review of this place. But what I can say is that everyone that visits Prague needs to visit this place. Not just for the beer, or the history, or the view, or the atmosphere. But because overall it just makes for a great day. You have to go the right way though, which is the most important thing about this place. It’s at the top of Petrin park which is a beautiful scenic park. Then it’s at the top of Mala Strana making it an easy walk to all the touristy stuff you should visit as well like the Prague Castle. So here’s the deal: I’m probably not the best at selling this place because it’s not necessarily about the place. It’s about the experience and if you don’t experience it the right way then it’ll be lost. So you have to walk up Petrin, visit the tower, walk around until the massive hill wears you out, go to the Monastery brewery and enjoy a few beers, and then walk through Mala Strana and through the Prague Castle, and all of the sudden you’ve had the best Prague walking tour in the city!

Letna

Ok if you haven’t gotten the general theme from all of my other recommendations, it’s that I love the parks in Prague and I love the beer. Letna is no different. I liked to go up later in the afternoon to the metronom and watch the skaters and bikers try to do tricks around the stairs. Then go to the beer garden to enjoy a fews beers. Letna is another beautiful park to chill out and enjoy the view. Another great place to enjoy sunset and see a different view of the city. Instead of looking out over Prague Castle, you get an amazing view of Old Town with the Vinohrady background. It’s not the most mind blowing experience by any means but it’s a great place to wind down after a tough day of walking around cobblestone streets and up massive hills. Just go, chill out, and enjoy the views!
